Backyard Sauna Installation: Complete Guide
From site selection to first session, everything you need to know.
Step 1: Site Selection
Choose a location that's:
- Level: Or can be leveled without major excavation
- Accessible: Consider how you'll move panels from driveway to site
- Private: You'll want to cool off outside between sessions
- Near electrical: Shorter wire runs = lower installation costs
- Away from trees: Falling branches and leaf debris are concerns
Step 2: Foundation Preparation
Your sauna needs a level, stable base. Options:
- Concrete pad: Most durable. 4" thick with wire mesh reinforcement.
- Paver patio: Compacted gravel base + sand + pavers. Good drainage.
- Existing deck: Must support 1,500-2,500 lbs. Check with a contractor.
Critical: Level within 1/4" across the entire surface. Use a 4' level to check.
Step 3: Electrical Planning
Most electric heaters require:
- 240V dedicated circuit
- 40-60 amp breaker (depending on heater kW)
- Properly rated wire for the distance
- Weatherproof disconnect near the sauna
Hire a licensed electrician. This is not a DIY electrical project. Budget $500-1,500 depending on distance and local rates.
Step 4: Assembly
For a typical sauna kit like the SaunaLife CL5G:
- Time: 12-20 hours with 2-3 people
- Tools: Drill, level, rubber mallet, basic hand tools
- Process: Floor frame → walls → roof → benches → heater → trim
About 80% of our customers choose professional installation. We provide installer referrals.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing: Take breaks. Fatigue leads to errors.
- Solo assembly: These kits require two people minimum.
- Skipping the level check: An unlevel foundation causes problems forever.
- Wrong heater size: Undersized heaters never reach proper temperature.
- Forgetting ventilation: Saunas need fresh air intake and exhaust.
